DL-Raid: An Environment for Supporting Digital Library Services
نویسندگان
چکیده
Digital libraries are a repository of documents that are large volumes of integrated text, image, video and sound data. In such an environment, users may not have an eecient access mechanisms for the data, and in some cases may not even know what is available and how and where it is located. To facilitate the users in retrieving the documents from this vast information base, digital libraries must provide interactive support. This will allow the users to enter into a dialogue with an information base server and successively reene the query if the query is not suucient to locate the desired information. In a wide area network (WAN), such a dialogue will be communication intensive. We are currently developing a digital library prototype called DL-Raid at the Raid laboratory at Purdue University to study the feasibility and sensitivity of various retrieval schemes in distributed environments. In this paper, we present the architecture of the DL-Raid and the data model supported by this prototype. We investigate the partial content-based retrieval schemes in the prototype. We present the results of various communication experiments with large data objects and analyze these results to study their eeects on the eecient retrievals of data in the digital library environment.

A symbol-based fuzzy decision-making approach to evaluate the user satisfaction on services in academic digital libraries
Academic libraries play a significant role in providing core services that include research, teaching and learning. Usersatisfaction is an important indicator for evaluating the performance of library service. This paper develops a methodfor measuring the user satisfaction in a group decision-making environment. First, the performance of service isevaluated by using questionnaire survey. The sc...
متن کاملSupporting Information Access in Next Generation Digital Library Architectures
Current developments on Service-oriented Architectures, Peer-to-Peer and Grid computing promise more open and flexible architectures for digital libraries. They will open DL technology to a wider clientele, allow faster adaptability and enable the usage of federative models on content and service provision. These technologies rise new challenges for the realization of DL functionalities, which ...
متن کاملDigital library support for public health simulation infrastructures
Epidemiological simulation environments produce extremely large quantities of scientific, numeric digital objects. Traditional digital libraries and services fail to effectively support simulation-based tasks. The requirements for this class of digital libraries can be described through formal definitions of content, users, and services. The set of definitions provide a basis for developing a s...
متن کاملDigital Libraries in the Context of Users’ Broader Activities
In this paper we present DiLAS, a dedicated service for the management of annotations, supporting complex collaborative applications in distributed environments. The mission of DiLAS is to foster change in users’ interaction with digital libaries (DL) and contribute to developing services for social infrastructures in DLs. We thus introduce a new independent annotation service for interactive k...

Digital library (DL) increasingly becomes an important learning topic for training librarians and information specialists. However, due to many perspectives, models, and activities developed in DL field, it is difficult for students to develop an initial clear understanding of DL. Current available e-learning environments (such as Blackboard) cannot provide the desired functionalities for suppo...
